Part of our guide to visitor attraction marketing
Growing a gallery mailing list through visitor choice

Someone enjoying an exhibition may want to hear about the next one. They need an understandable invitation and a clear sense of what the gallery will send.
Growing a gallery mailing list is easier to manage when its purpose is specific. Exhibition announcements and public events are more informative than a vague promise of updates.
Describe the list before asking people to join
Explain the kind of messages subscribers can expect. If the list includes sales information as well as events, make that clear.
Keep the collection form proportionate. An email address and an explicit choice may be enough for the intended purpose; additional information needs a reason.
Where guest Wi-Fi is involved, separate the marketing choice from access. Visitors should be able to connect without subscribing.
Margovy's customer-list features record the marketing choices made during sign-in.
Give the welcome page an exhibition purpose
Link to current opening hours and the exhibition information visitors may want while in the space. If there is a catalogue or shop, label that destination accurately.
Use images and artist details only with the relevant permissions and checks. A public exhibition does not remove the need to manage reproduction rights.
Make event booking requirements easy to find. A private view invitation should explain whether registration is needed and who the event is intended for.
Keep the first screen selective so practical information remains easy to reach.
Write a welcome that introduces the programme
For visitors who opt in, a short email can explain where to find upcoming exhibitions and how to contact the gallery.
Avoid claiming an interest in a particular artist simply because someone connected during an exhibition. The person may have visited for another reason.
A maintained programme page is a useful destination for an ongoing message. Individual exhibition dates need review when the programme changes.
The ICO's direct marketing guidance explains the wider principles of transparent collection and respecting preferences.

Review the list alongside participation
Use event registrations and direct enquiries to understand response. Email clicks identify interest in a destination, not attendance or purchases.
Read replies and unsubscribe feedback for signs that the list's purpose is unclear. Adjust the invitation if people receive a different kind of message from what they expected.
See how Margovy adds guest Wi-Fi, and ask about the gallery layout if visitors use several rooms or shared spaces.
The list should remain useful to someone who enjoys the programme even when they do not buy anything.
